Remember Your First Job
Remember your first job? Whether you were a college graduate or right out of high school, you felt like an adult perhaps for the first time. It was a new beginning - to believe that you would one day be self-sufficient with choices in your life. Young people in Woodland often tell ALMS that they want to make enough money to help their family. During COVID, one young lady started attending ALMS in the park. We continued until she completed the program. Within weeks after completing, she found the confidence to interview for an entry-level job that could turn into a career. She was offered the job on the spot and is working as a receptionist in an accounting office.
Besides learning character, communication skills and work ethic, ALMS youth also learn to be grateful. Below is a thank you letter to Cathy, a grandmother, ALMS mentor and a new entrepreneur.
Dear Cathy,
I want to thank you for teaching me many things. You have helped me understand even if I make mistakes at a young age, it’s never too late to turn your life around and work towards your dream.
I really enjoyed our talks outside of session. You included me as an intern in your small business. I loved that you talked to me about your family, as well as meeting your daughter and grandsons. It made me feel closer to you.
I really appreciated you being able to see my potential and ask me to help you with your gift basket business. Even though I wasn’t able to attend the event, I really enjoyed learning how to wrap. Thank you for all the motivation and courage you gave me. I’ll forever appreciate you.”
ALMS is thankful to businesses that give our youth an opportunity to see their potential. Thank you to Stacey Nixon of Darin Nixon EA Financial Services, www.darinnixonea.com. Also we are grateful to ALMS mentor Cathy Valdez, Custom Gift Baskets Handled With Love, misscathrinevaldez@gmail.com.
If you feel that you are not qualified to mentor, ask Cathy how a single mom and now grandmother has three hours a week to serve her community. Cathy shares her friendship, life experience and caring spirit to empower young people to believe in themselves.
You can support our youth by providing your time, talent and/or finances. ALMS is seeking monthly givers through this grassroots initiative that does not pay salaries and will not rely on government funding. ALMS invites you, the community to support the mission to empower youth ages 15-25 through job readiness training.
