When They Say Thank You

Have you ever given your time to someone and they never showed their appreciation? It's very special when they say, "Thank you. I get it." During COVID-19 ALMS was privileged to serve a number of young adults. Below is a tribute from one of the young men who met with mentors on Sunday afternoons.

Dear Jim and Darrell,

I want to start off by telling you guys how appreciative I am for you taking the time out of your day and spending it with me. It makes me happy knowing there are people like you guys that just want to help out as much as you can. I know it’s not easy because life gets in the way. Yet, you still chose to mentor me about life skills. I look up to men like you who are good members of the community who give back.

The lessons were more than helpful, and they taught me to go with the flow and to get as much out of life as I can, reach my full potential and don’t just be a taker – be a giver. Give back to people whether giving them a helping hand or answering their phone calls if they are in need.

You guys were still supportive when I slipped up and didn’t judge me, but you did motivate me to bounce back and stay proactive.

At first, I just wanted to get through ALMS for my court requirement. I wanted to do what I had to and get out of there. I then realized that these lessons are so helpful and useful, and I can use a lot more of this. You guys are the reason I want to continue this program and I hope to make you both proud in the coming years. Words don’t even describe how appreciative and thankful I am for having you in my life.

Jim and Darrell (center and right of the picture) met with this young man who found himself in a little trouble. One mentor, a successful businessman shares out of his experience and 11 years sobriety. The other mentor is a jack of all trades and retired after 17 years on death row at San Quentin as a prison guard. Both family men are dedicated to helping troubled youth become men of character who give back to their community.

Your support of ALMS will help us continue to be there for youth who need the support, direction and friendship of retired and acting professionals in our community. Your support can help us help them learn life skills and become self sufficient adults who give back to their community.

Happy New Year, Yolo! We love you.
